David Sutherland, CPA/CFF, CFE, MAFF is the President and founder of DHF Financial Forensics PLLC and is passionate about financial forensics.
Prior to founding the company, Dave served as a financial forensic expert for a national Forensic Accounting firm in Scottsdale, Arizona. While at that firm, Dave honed his financial forensic investigative and analytical skills. Prior to his work with that firm, in 2009, Dave served as a criminal investigator with the Phoenix Police Department.

During his public service with the police department, Dave distinguished himself as an exceptional white-collar crimes investigator. Because of his passion, tenacity, and attention to detail, Dave earned a detective position with the Professional Standards Bureau, where he conducted numerous internal audits, continuing inspections, and white-collar crime investigations. As a result of his non-traditional background, he has distinguished himself as an expert in financial forensics. He provides credible opinions, which are clear and concise. He specializes in measuring lost profits, background investigations, asset searches, analysis of financial condition, personal injury and wrongful death lost earnings and earnings capacity, and embezzlement investigations (e.g. civil and criminal). He has assisted insurance carriers, legal counsel, and business owners in resolving over a thousand insurance claims involving economic damages in excess of a hundred million dollars. He has testified as an expert witness in federal and state courts in Arizona, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and Utah. Dave values personal relationships and is committed to providing exceptional service to his clients.
Dave has presented both locally and nationally on the topics of white-collar crimes, financial forensic economic damages, fraud examinations, and case management to various law enforcement and professional organizations. He has presented nationally on topics, such as financial forensics, white-collar crime investigations, and statistical analysis. He has also presented on the topic of Financial Forensics in Criminal Cases for the Arizona Society of Certified Public Accountant and at Arizona State University W.P. Carey Master of Accountancy program. He has also presented continuing professional education and continuing legal education classes on the topics of business interruption, extra expense, property loss as well as fidelity loss related economic damages to a variety of audiences that include insurance carriers, law firms, and professional organizations. He has had the privilege of being selected as a guest presenter for the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and the National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts. He has authored articles on the topics of economic damages and white-collar crimes.
Dave earned a B.S. in Economics and B.A. in Japanese from Arizona State University. He also earned a M.S. in Accountancy from the University of Phoenix. He is a graduate of the Arizona Law Enforcement Academy in Phoenix, Arizona, and the U.S. Marine Corps Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia. Dave is a Certified Public Accountant in the States of Utah and Arizona, Certified in Financial Forensics by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and a Certified Fraud Examiner through the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. He is an active member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Arizona Society of Certified Public Accountants, Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants, National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts, American Bar Association, and the National Association of Forensic Economics.
On a personal note, Dave loves spending time with his family while experiencing the world. He is an avid angler and loves the outdoors. He is actively involved in youth programs with his church.
